We built this site to make it easy
for you to learn a lot about a broad range of accountable
charities.
How to find charities:
By what they do: On our
home page, you can click on any of 32
categories, ranging from "Aging" to "Youth." You will
get a list of charities whose work fits these categories.
By location: Also on
our home page, you can get a list of charities working nationally
or internationally or a list of charities working in California
or the DC metropolitan area.
By using our alphabetical
index.
What you will find:
Each charity’s mailing, e-mail and
web addresses, as well as its phone and fax numbers.
A brief description of its
work and the year it began.
How much it spends on fund-raising
and administrative costs. (This percentage is determined
by the federal government and is based on an analysis of the reports
each charity must file every year with the Internal Revenue Service.)
Its 4-digit Combined Federal Campaign
number.
Its answers to six questions
many donors ask about charities:
- Why do you exist?
- What have you accomplished?
- How do you help people in my
community?
- Why do you need my support?
- How can I be sure you will use
my money wisely and won’t waste it?
- Can I volunteer? How?
How to view or
print your own guide to charities
You can view and/or
print in text-only format a list of charities in each of 32
categories, or the lists of "National/International Charities"
or "DC Metro-area Charities." These lists include each charity’s
addresses and short description.
You can view and/or
print in PDF form any of the four printed, photo-filled guides
to charities we produce each year. Downloading these guides can
take several minutes. You can also ask us to send you a guide.
