Charities Responding to the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

Many charities are responding to the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Below is a list of charities on this website that are providing assistance to Japan, with links to each charity’s website so you can learn more about how it is responding.

In addition, on our website, you can learn about each charity’s mission, see its answers to six basic questions about its work (such as, “How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely?”) and see how much it spends on administration and overhead. (For each charity, you can learn this information by clicking on "All Charities A to Z" and then clicking on the charity’s name.)

As you think about which causes to support, please read our advice about giving in response to a disaster. Please keep in mind that the need for help in responding to a natural disaster like this earthquake will continue long past the initial rescue and clean-up. Rebuilding lives and communities will take years and untold resources. Thank you for wanting to do what you can in response to this catastrophe.

Baptist World Alliance
Baptist World Aid (BWAid), the relief and development arm of the Baptist World Alliance, is responding to the various needs following Japan’s catastrophe. BWAid’s Rescue 24 team arrived in Japan from Hungary and the USA on Saturday, March 12, and linked up with Baptist groups in Japan. Rescue 24 were able to travel north to the disaster zone, assessing needs with Japanese leaders.

Plans were drawn up to provide relief through Japanese Baptists, and these will be shared by other Baptist groups from around the world who are ready, willing and able to serve in Japan.

OPERATION BLESSING INTERNATIONAL
Operation Blessing is distributing food, water and other emergency relief to displaced families living in shelters in and around hard-hit Sendai, Japan. We are also planning to expand the distributions to include emergency relief supplies and electrical generators, and are poised to send relief supplies from the U.S. and the Philippines should they be needed in the relief effort. OBI is also helping fund efforts by Humedica, a partnering NGO from Germany that specializes in disaster medicine.

ADRA International
ADRA’s Japan office began in 1985 primarily as a funding office for developing nations. Due to the numerous natural disasters that face this great nation, ADRA Japan already had an emergency response plan formulated, tested and in place. This pre-planning allowed our workers to rush to the affected areas and begin working.
The cold weather, intermittent electricity and telecommunication services are making a difficult situation even more challenging. Working closely with the local government, ADRA is preparing for the possible management of displacement centers, caring for some of the more than 370,000 children, women and men who were evacuated from their homes that were washed away.

Food for the Hungry
Food for the Hungry is responding and receiving donations for the Japan earthquake and tsunami.

We are working with Japan International Food for the Hungry (JIFH), which is on the ground. Initial assessments indicate the greatest needs to be food, shelter and warm clothing. JIFH is working with churches and other ministries to mobilize people to reach out.

Specifics on our response are unfolding. We will be updating our website daily or as we receive information. We will have a banner on our homepage.

How can you help?

Please pray for the safety of the victims, their families, relief workers and the JIFH staff.
