Prevent Cancer Foundation

The Prevent Cancer Foundation is a national, nonprofit health foundation whose mission is the prevention and early detection of cancer through scientific research, education and community outreach.

How do you help people in my community?

In 2003 alone, the GW/CRPF Mammovan provided nearly 1,800 free mammograms to women in need in the Washington, DC area. That is a total of nearly $240,000 in uncompensated care, including follow-up care for women who have a problem.

Nearly 15,000 mammograms have been provided since the program began in 1996.  Among these are 62 women with early stage cancers who may never have been diagnosed early without this service.   The Foundation’s  ¡Celebremos la Vida! program targets Spanish-speaking Latinas who have few medical resources. At its two D.C. locations – the Spanish Catholic Center in the District’s Adams Morgan neighborhood and at the Lombardi Cancer Center, nearly 450 women were screened for breast and cervical cancer in the last year.  Most of these women have no health insurance and few options for preventive health care.

Why do you need my support?

Most of the Foundation’s dollars come from individuals with an interest in cancer prevention and early detection. Without our donors’ gifts, CRPF could not provide critical seed money to young researchers, or expand its outreach programs. For nearly 20 years, the Foundation has depended on the generosity of men and women who share its vision for a cancer-free future.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

More than 87 cents of every dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to research and educational programs.  It meets the standards of the Wise Giving Alliance and the National Charities Information Bureau and is a member of the Combined Federal Campaign (#9504).

Can I Volunteer? How?

The Foundation has a number of special events and is happy to have volunteers from the community. Contact Development at 703-836-4412.
