As a partner with Feeding America, we network with nearly 900 charitable agency sites to provide food for over 34 million meals annually for residents of LA County.
How do you help people in my community?
The Los Angeles Regional Foodbank helps feed hungry families in Los Angeles County. All donations received provides enough food for over 575,000 meals a week for hungry families. Each year 657,000 LA County residents seek emergency food assistance from food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters served by the Foodbank.
Why do you need my support?
Financial contributions are critical. Because of our efficient operation, for every dollar donated, the Foodbank distributes 7 pounds of food. Therefore, a gift of $25 provides enough food for 150 meals, making an incredible impact. The Foodbank works with an array of community partners to raise awareness of the problem of hunger in Los Angeles County. Events like National Hunger Awareness Day each June give us the opportunity to educate the public about the challenges we continue to face in the fight against hunger. By partnering with local officials and other agencies working with the hungry, we hope to address not only the direct affects of hunger, but also the causes of hunger in our community.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
As someone who wants to help the hungry in your community, you want your gifts to go toward food, not overhead. The Los Angeles Regional Foodbank takes great care to ensure efficiency in the allocation of your gifts. 98.1% of our resources (financial and product donations) go directly toward program services that fight hunger in Los Angeles County.
The Foodbank measures the success of our programs by the number of pounds of food distributed and numerous other measurements. Our agency relations and inventory control staff keep careful records of agency statistics and pounds distributed. Our agency relations staff also monitors and evaluate our network of partner agencies on an annual basis. In addition, our network of partners is regularly invited to give feedback on current food needs and other issues.
All departments prepare monthly reports on finances, product donations, volunteers, agencies and other programs as applicable. These reports are reviewed monthly by the President/CEO and quarterly by the Board of Directors. The Foodbank obtains an annual certified audit and a single audit per government requirements. The Foodbank's Board of Directors meets every quarter, and board committees meet as often as needed. Board committees include: Executive, Mission Effectiveness, Audit, Finance, Board Development, and Major Gifts. In 2006, the Board of Directors will develop a new Strategic Plan for the next three-year period.
Can I Volunteer? How?
Our volunteers are the backbone of the Foodbank. Without our volunteers, we could not provide the cost effective service that over 1,000 charitable agency sites depend on to feed the hungry of Los Angeles County.
The Foodbank assists many companies throughout Los Angeles in designing a volunteer program where employees come together to help us in our warehouse. Company-sponsored volunteer activities improve teamwork skills that transfer to the workplace and promote team spirit by allowing people to get better acquainted with their colleagues outside of the workplace. Volunteer opportunities include sorting food and making kits that will be distributed to hungry children and families.
