Help the Afghan Children

Established in 1993. Providing innovative, quality educational programs that make a tangible difference to Afghan children, allowing them to become productive citizens and promoting a peaceful, stable Afghanistan. 888-403-0407

How do you help people in my community?

Currently, Help the Afghan Children (HTAC) focuses all of its project activity inside Afghanistan. The importance of HTAC’s work to your community lies in the greater interconnectedness of today’s global community and (especially after September 11th. 2001), that one of the most powerful ways to defeat terrorism and the threat of terrorism, anywhere in the world – including one’s own community – is to provide a new generation of Afghan children a real opportunity to become educated, productive adults and contribute to a more peaceful, prosperous Afghanistan.

Why do you need my support?

After the overthrow of the Taliban-controlled government in the Fall of 2001, a global media frenzy descended upon Afghanistan and for millions of Americans, it was their first look inside a war-torn country, its people, and especially its children – that needed help.  What followed for a brief period of time was an incredible outpouring of goodwill by individuals, organizations, and governments the world over during those first months of post-conflict development.

Unfortunately, much of the world has forgotten about Afghanistan (again), and many institutional donors have diverted their funding elsewhere, leaving many effective programs, services, and initiatives in peril.  For Help the Afghan Children, our greatest and most sustained support has always come from individual donors like you.

These are people who have examined and seen the impact our work has had on improving the lives and hopes of Afghan girls and boys, their families, and their communities.  Because Afghanistan is such a poor country, a little money can go a long way.  Just $25 can provide school supplies to 5 students for 2 months.  $50 a month can provide just enough support for a teacher (who is paid a meager salary by the government), to continue their critical work.  $100 will pay for publishing 30 books for special programs, and $500 will pay for security, safe drinking water, and electricity to 1200 students in one school for a month.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

Help the Afghan Children is dedicated to making sure that every possible dollar we receive is used to provide and sustain our programs and services which directly benefit Afghan children, their families, and the communities we serve.

Donors can feel confident about how their contributions are used by HTAC for a variety of reasons:  HTAC has received the Seal of Approval from the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance which indicates that we have successfully met all 20 BBB charity standards of accountability; a distinction that many other non-profit organizations do not have.  HTAC believes that another test of donor accountability is performance and we are one of the few non-profit organizations that post a performance scorecard on our website, reflecting how effective we are in delivering quality education to Afghan children.  HTAC also utilizes a continuous improvement process that evaluates all critical programs and services; determines what needs to be improved; redesigns and implements necessary changes; and measures the results. Donors can evaluate how effective we are in utilizing the funds we receive by reviewing the financial information on our annual report and reading about the impact our programs are having on schools and children.

At HTAC, all but two of our staff work 100% of their time in Afghanistan and a good portion of our Executive Director’s work is directly devoted to programming and services with frequent trips to Afghanistan.

Can I Volunteer? How?

Help the Afghan Children does not currently offer any volunteer opportunities within Afghanistan, however, involvement opportunities exist  through our outreach ambassador program that is posted on our website.  This program provides meaningful opportunities for individuals to support HTAC within their own communities primarily by raising awareness and educating people about what is happening today in Afghanistan and the critical importance of our work.

Volunteer internships are also available for students (through their colleges and universities), to gain valuable experience while assisting HTAC through specially designed projects.
