Through its "Housing First" Program, helps homeless families with children to move into permanent, affordable housing in residential neighborhoods and then provides social services to help families rebuild their lives.
Why do we exist?
Beyond Shelter's "Housing First" Program helps homeless families with children move as quickly as possible into permanent rental housing, in residential neighborhoods located throughout Los Angeles County. After they are living in permanent housing, they receive six months to one year of social services to help them stabilize and rebuild their lives. Our mission is to develop systemic approaches to combat poverty and homelessness among families with children, and enhance their economic security and well-being. Maria is a 30-year-old single mother of 4 children, ages 12, 9, 6, and 2. The family became homeless after Maria finally gained the courage to leave an abusive relationship. Maria had been physically abused for years. She and her children fled to an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence. Chantay is a 28-year-old single mother of two children, ages 6 and 2. Chantay and her children became homeless when the apartment building they were living in was sold and she was asked to leave. Unable to afford the costs of moving to another apartment, they began living in an emergency shelter. Ynomee is a 35-year-old single mother with a 17-year-old son. Ynomee and her son became homeless when she lost her job of eight years, working as a waitress at a restaurant. When the restaurant went out of business, Ynomee was laid off. She tried to find another job, but could not.
What have you accomplished?
Over the past two decades, Beyond Shelter has successfully helped almost 5,000 homeless families move into permanent housing – including approximately 10,000 children. A remarkable 85% of these families do not become homeless again. Beyond Shelter's Housing First Program has been identified as one of 19 "Solutions for America" by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change.
