The Beacon House helps men to recover from alcoholism and addiction. We help men find a new life in sobriety and service to the community.
Why do we exist?
The mission and purpose for our existence is to help men recover from the diseases of alcoholism and addiction to other drugs. We provide them with food, shelter, counseling and the time to build a solid foundation for long term recovery that will enable them to become self-supporting and contributing members of society, to their homes and families.
Beacon House remains on the last long term treatment and recovery homes. We believe that effective and long lasting recovery takes time and that it must involve all areas of the alcoholics life including his physical, mental and spiritual life. We assist them not only in learning how to live life without alcohol and other drugs but to learn how to live in the world. The men get the time to re-unite with their family, learn a trade or vocation, become employed and self-supporting, and to live a life of service to the community.
Alcoholism and drug addiction affect everyone. There is no segment of our population that is not affected. Untreated alcoholism and drug addiction destroys families, communities, affects employers, costs tax payers money in health care and criminal justice systems. It affects all economic, social and ethnic communities. We all know someone who is either directly or indirectly affected by untreated alcoholism. Effective, affordable and available treatment is not readily available. Beacon House helps meet the need for many people who would otherwise go without treatment.
We all benefit when people get sober and return to the community to take care of their family, work and contribute to make life better for everyone.
What have you accomplished?
Beacon House has helped over 5000 men since we first opened our doors in 1970. In the year 2000 we began keeping track of our continued sobriety rates after completion of our treatment and recovery program. Our studies show that of all the men who complete the program over 70% remain clean and sober year after year. Our success rate is unprecedented and unmatched. We believe that this is a direct result of our insistence that the men take as much time as is needed to build a good, solid foundation for recovery and to learn how to maintain that sobriety after they leave our program. Long term sobriety requires long term treatment and care. Just as the diabetics health requires attention to diet and medication our recovery depends on continued participation in aftercare, service to others and attendance or participation in 12 Step or other support groups.
A case study of our effectiveness is the story of Ed who came to us with a long history of alcoholism and drug use. He was raised by a single mother with a history of alcoholism and drug addiction. He started drinking and using drugs at age 10 and continued a life of prison and jails until he came to us in his mid-30’s looking for help. His wife and children were homeless and tired of his life of drug use and prisons. Ed come to us like many of our other men; hopeless, helpless and scared. After surrendering to his helplessness he was ready to ask for help and became willing to get the help he needed. After completing the Primary Program Ed enrolled in a local trade school, obtained job skills and then became employed. He was able to get a good job, return to his family and is now going on over 12 years of continued sobriety. He is happy, self-supporting and is of service to his community and he continues to help other men like himself.
