AMC Cancer Fund (aka AMC Cancer Research Center)

Dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the University of Colorado Cancer Center to support its outstanding programs in cancer prevention, care, education, research and service to the nation.

How do you help people in my community?

Most of us, at one point in our lives, will be profoundly touched by the impact of cancer.  The collaboration taking place among the top researchers and scientists across the nation and around the world does not just benefit those patients at a local level…the positive effects will be felt in many communities for many years.  For example, when a doctor at the University of Colorado Cancer Center discovers that lung cancer patients with a particular DNA respond tremendously well to a particular drug - effectively “melting away” their cancer - other researchers around the country will begin following the science and eventually offering clinical trials in their own communities.  In addition, providing support and follow up care to cancer survivors is now a recognized and specialized phase of care in oncology. AMC was at the forefront of this trend, creating the Cancer Information and Counseling Line in 1981. With continued support this free, national service will provide cancer patients and their families in all communities with the information and individual attention they need.

Why do you need my support?

At AMC, we believe in the Power of One.  It’s ingrained in our history...for over 50 years we have supported cancer research, treatment and education through funds received by small one-time donations as well as large annual gifts.  When donors support innovative and cutting-edge research that have promising results, those initial funds are leveraged by the doctors to secure large foundation and government grants to continue the research that, eventually, leads to discoveries as we fight the battle against cancer. In 1971, a war was declared on cancer.  Since then, great strides have been made in understanding and controlling this deadly disease.  Our vision is to continue the war, celebrating survival while working toward a world without cancer.  The research of the past has laid the foundation for the future. The key to our continued success is the support of donors like you who care about cancer and making a difference, but also believe in making a wise investment with your charitable dollars.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

AMC believes in transparency and being good stewards of our donor’s dollars.  We realize that there are many organizations focusing on cancer, and therefore want to assure you that your donations are being utilized for the prevention and control of cancer, as well as research, treatment, education in our overall service to the nation.  80% of all donations go to our programs, and we strive to keep expenses to a minimum to ensure that we can profoundly achieve our mission.

Can I Volunteer? How?

Volunteerism is an important part of our organization.  For over 50 years, the National Volunteer Organization has worked at the grass-roots level to raise funds and awareness for AMC and the cancer cause.  In addition, we have volunteer leadership roles on our event steering committees and advisory boards.  For those who prefer to be involved in community outreach, a Speakers Bureau and other opportunities to help us educate communities about the prevention and control of cancer are available.  Please contact Frieda Sands at 303-239-3317 or sandsf@amc.org for more information about volunteering.
