World Vision

Relief and development organization helping children worldwide by tackling causes of poverty (accessing water, food, health care, education and economic opportunities). Christian agency serves all regardless of religion, race or gender.

How do you help people in my community?

In urban and rural U.S. communities, World Vision annually serves more than 1 million people by providing tutoring, mentoring, leadership training, and building, household and school supplies. In 2001, World Vision achieved the following in the United States:

  • Served 647,725 children and 370,380 adults
  • Provided tutoring, mentoring, and/or school supplies to 235,387 children
  • Recruited the assistance of 100,975 volunteers
  •  Coordinated the provision of 432,378 volunteer hours
  • Raised $12.4 million for assistance to those directly affected by the events of September 11; this has covered training for trauma counselors, grants for widows and orphans of firefighters and police officers who were killed as a result of the attacks, and assistance to people who lost family members or became unemployed.

Why do you need my support?

In 2001, about 80 percent of World Vision’s support came from individuals, churches, and nongovernmental organizations. World Vision used these resources to help 75 million people either recover from disaster or participate in long-term development projects with the goal of freeing them from the vicious cycle of poverty. Your assistance means that lives are saved and children and their families are assisted in overcoming the negative impacts of poverty, war, disease, and famine. Donors play an integral part in the work of World Vision. It is through your compassion and generosity that our staff are able to serve the poorest of the poor. For example, whether you give:

  •  $36 to provide a child from a developing country with tuition for a year, a new school uniform, and a backpack full of essential school supplies
  • $175 to send a disadvantaged, inner-city U.S. youth to spring or summer camp
  • $355 to provide a 12-foot boat and a net for a fisherman in Bangladesh
  • $700 to provide a hearing assessment test, a custom-fitted hearing aid, and one year’s worth of batteries for a hearing-impaired child under age 6 in Jerusalem.
  • $880 to build a water well for a family in rural Albania, Europe’s poorest country ...

you are participating in the transformation of lives. Yes, your gift does make a difference!

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

World Vision is audited each year by the professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Richard Stearns, President of World Vision United States, the World Vision Board of Directors, and World Vision’s staff are committed to sound stewardship in allocating donor dollars to provide funding for thousands of programs worldwide. As a founding member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA), World Vision meets the ECFA’s standards for wise use of funds and other resources. The actual percentage of funds spent on administrative and fundraising expenses is 15.9 percent as of September 2001. That means that for every dollar you give to World Vision, 84.1 cents goes to help those in need. You can trust that your gift is transforming a life!

Can I Volunteer? How?

World Vision offers numerous opportunities for volunteers in select communities across America. Tutor a struggling inner-city student, renovate the home of a low-income senior, or spend a Saturday afternoon helping to distribute clothing or school supplies.
