How do you help people in my community?
State Veterans Homes are interconnected with the 140 communities that they serve. Since the Civil War, Veterans Homes have provided high quality health care services to state residents in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
In turn, Veterans Homes have become symbols of pride for their communities and receive wide-spread volunteer support from local civic groups, churches, schools, chambers of commerce, veteran organizations and military bases.
Community participation greatly improves the quality of life for residents and is one of Veterans Homes’ most distinctive characteristics.
Why do you need my support?
Tom Haass is a resident of the Veterans Home of Wyoming, a state in which $65 per month - or $2.10 per day - is allotted for personal discretionary spending. That's why a few extra dollars go a long way in helping Mr. Haass and his fellow residents afford clothing, personal hygiene products and items from the Home's "canteen." But beyond providing for the basic daily needs of the residents, additional outside money, such as that provided by the Foundation, helps with hobby shop supplies, indigent dental and eye care and more - all of which makes a significant difference in the residents’ quality of life.
Alice Yarborough is a certified nurse assistant at the Oklahoma Veterans Center. The Foundation’s nursing scholarship has allowed Alice to attend the LEAP Nurse Training Workshop. Alice has learned that, although she is a young, entry-level nursing assistant, she can still contribute to the care planning process and personally improve a resident’s care. We think that Alice is now more motivated about nursing, will remain on the job longer and will have a greater chance of dedicating her career to taking care of veterans. We are reducing nurse turnover by 25% this year in Oklahoma and are increasing the consistency and quality of veteran health care.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
The Foundation’s Board of Directors is currently comprised of Army Nurse Corps officers, Air Force senior NCOs, senior staff (retired) of the VA and Veteran Home administrators Accomplished professionals know how to support the well-being of elderly and disabled veterans in a cost-effective manner.
Our financial records are audited annually and proudly reflect a low administrative cost ratio.
