USA for UNHCR (United States Association for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees)

We help Americans support the lifesaving work of the UN Refugee Agency, which provides protection, emergency assistance, health care and education for refugees worldwide, especially women and children.

How do you help people in my community?

There are former refugees living in every state of our nation. They are hard at work in all of our communities, leading active and productive lives. Many of these individuals owe their lives to the intervention of UNHCR field staff.

In addition, USA for UNHCR is working with UNHCR to provide accurate information about refugees to teachers across the United States. The goal of this project is to reduce misconceptions about refugees and allow kids to understand our nation's proud tradition of assisting those who can't go home.

Our "community" extends to those Americans who care about international issues, and who understand why refugees need our help. These are people who know that the answer to the question "why don't they just go home?" is "they would -- if they could."

Why do you need my support?

The US Association for UNHCR is the only charity in the United States that works exclusively to support UNHCR, the United Nations' agency for refugees.

While UNHCR receives the majority of its support from governments, our association relies completely on the generosity of Americans to continue our work. With a small bud dedicated staff, we are turning the good wishes of thousands of Americans into new lives for refugees around the world. Every dollar helps.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

During 1999, more than 96 percent of our expenses were for programs. We have a staff of four (supplemented by lots of volunteers and interns), but we are dedicated to providing the greatest amount of programs for the least amount of administrative expenses. Our accounts are audited annually, and our Board of Directors meets four times each year to make sure we remain on track.

Can I Volunteer? How?

Absolutely. Contact our office for more details. We have wonderful opportunities available for those who are interested in grassroots advocacy and organizing, internet work, and fundraising.
