How do you help people in my community?
SOME is a local organization, providing much-needed services and care to the District’s most vulnerable residents. In partnership with caring community members like you, we are able to serve hundreds of children, women and men each day, providing food, clothing, medical care, counseling, job training, affordable housing and more to those who need it most.
Why do you need my support?
SOME depends upon gifts of all sizes from individuals to maintain its programs for the District’s poor and homeless. Your contribution will go a long way. It costs under $2.00 to serve a nourishing hot lunch to a hungry person or to provide warm gloves for protection from the cold. More than 50% of SOME’s support comes from individuals, and it is because of this support that we were able to weather the most difficult economy we have experienced in decades. Without your donation SOME would be unable to provide services for the increased number of neediest families and single adults, including the elderly and the mentally ill.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
SOME is deeply committed to responsible stewardship of our resources. In 2010, our overhead costs were only 11%. This means that 89% of the contributions that we received went directly to our programs for poor and homeless children, women and men.
SOME consistently earns a four star rating by the independent charity evaluator Charity Navigator, www.charitynavigator.com. SOME received the National Capital Business Ethics Award in 2007 in recognition of our exceptional stewardship, and we were featured on PBS’s Nightly Business Report as an exemplary non profit with transparent finances and outstanding stewardship. These honors, along with the continued support of our donors, and the careful oversight of our Board of Directors, reflect our strong focus on accountability, efficiency, and mission.
Our financial summary, based on a report by an independent auditor, is available at http://www.some.org/a_finans.html.
Can I Volunteer? How?
SOME could not possibly do its work without the help of our dedicated volunteers. More than 5,000 volunteers helped us to serve nearly one-quarter of a million meals last year in our Dining Room. They also visited homebound seniors, tutored and mentored students at our Center for Employment Training, provided administrative support, helped prepare for our Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger 5K run, and performed essential painting and landscaping tasks.
Please consider sharing your experience, talents and gifts with the poor and homeless whom we serve. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@some.org or (202) 797-8806 ext. 2113.
Thank you.
