How do you help people in my community?
SOME is a local organization, providing much-needed services and care to the District’s most vulnerable residents. In partnership with caring community members like you, we are able to serve hundreds of children, women and men each day, providing food, clothing, medical care, counseling, job training, affordable housing and more to those who need it most.
Why do you need my support?
SOME depends on gifts from caring individuals to maintain its programs for the District’s poor and homeless. Without your donations of time, talents, goods and funds, SOME would be unable to provide services for the neediest in our community. More than half of SOME’s support comes from private individual donors like you.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
SOME is deeply committed to the responsible stewardship of our resources. In 2007 our overhead costs were 9.2%, meaning that more than 90% of the contributions that we received went directly to our programs for poor and homeless children, women and men.
In 2007 SOME received the 2007 National Capital Business Ethics Award in recognition of its exceptional stewardship, and earlier this year we were featured on PBS’s Nightly Business Report as an exemplary non profit with transparent finances and outstanding stewardship. These honors reflect our strong focus on accountability, efficiency and mission.
Our financial summary, based on a report by an independent auditor, is available at http://www.some.org/a_finans.html.
Can I Volunteer? How?
SOME could not possibly do its work without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Roughly 4,000 volunteers helped us to serve nearly one-quarter of a million meals last year. They also visited homebound seniors, tutored and mentored children and students at our Center for Employment Training, and performed essential painting and landscaping tasks.
If you would like to share your experience, talents and gifts with the poor and homeless whom we serve, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@some.org or (202) 797-8806 ext. 2113.
