We're always here: 24-hour crisis services for assault survivors since 1972. Free counseling helps hundreds of children and adults each year heal from trauma. Community education on preventing sexual violence.
Why do we exist?
The DC Rape Crisis Center is dedicated to creating a world free of sexual violence. The Center works to effect social change through community outreach, education, and legal and public policy initiatives. We help survivors and their families heal from the aftermath of sexual violence through crisis intervention counseling and advocacy.
What have you accomplished?
In 2002 Center staff and volunteers answered 3,600 hotline calls and 172 companion calls. Counselors saw 197 individual clients and conducted four support groups. In the first half of 2003 we are experiencing the same level of clients and services.
Through our community outreach program we trained 8 Peer Educators on issues related to date rape and sexual harassment. The Peer Educators gave about 25 presentations to high school students in 8-10 different schools.
In partnership with two dozen DC public schools a total of 234 presentations have been made, reinforcing children’s instinctual feelings about right and wrong interactions and telling them who they can turn to for help.
In addition, 9 expanded three-session programs were conducted reaching almost 5,000 students.
