Pearl S. Buck International

Pearl S. Buck International is committed to improving the quality of life and expanding opportunities for children and their caregivers worldwide through adoption services and humanitarian programs providing education and healthcare.

How do you help people in my community?

In the United States, PSBI’s Welcome House Adoption Program seeks loving, permanent adoptive families for the thousands of orphaned children from both the United States and abroad. Welcome House provides information, educational counseling, child identification, matching and placement, as well as post-adoption assistance to both waiting children and adoptive families. Welcome House also works to find permanent homes for the thousands of “special needs” children in the foster care system. These are “waiting children,” who, without the support and stability of a permanent family, are often at high risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system. To date, Welcome House has placed over 6,200 orphaned children from the United States and abroad with adoptive families.

Why do you need my support?

Pearl S. Buck International has historically been able to make limited resources go far in publicizing and alleviating the injustices faced by marginalized children living in the shadows of intolerance and discrimination. Your support, along with PSBI’s stewardship, that has been a critical element of our success, would allow us to invest in our capacity to do ever so much more. Your gift will ensure that children, families and communities around the world will continue to receive hope and encouragement through PSBI programs as they work to make positive changes in their own lives. Moreover, you will become our partner, as together we will achieve our vision of “a world where all children live with hope.”

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

PSBI is governed by a fifteen member volunteer Board of Directors representing the corporate, legal, academic and non-profit arenas. The Board of Directors is responsible for providing stewardship over all of PSBI’s financial and programmatic operations as required by law. Stewardship includes serving on various board sub-committees, including finance, development and program committees.

PSBI Board of Directors ensures that the organization maintains a consistently low percentage of dollars raised to dollars spent on administration, with the bulk of revenue generated going to our program work. Such careful stewardship has earned PSBI an “A” rating from both the Better Business Bureau and the American Institute of Philanthropy, two of the most well-known and respected consumer and charitable information services in the United States.

In 1999, PSBI spent 82% of revenue generated on programs, while 18% covered administrative costs. At the same time, our programs in community development, child and family services, adoption and inter-cultural education reached more than 100,000 children, family and community members.

Can I Volunteer? How?

PSBI relies on its committed volunteers for their expertise, enthusiasm and loyalty. Volunteers serve as tour guides or operate the International Gift Shop at PSBI’s Home Office in Pennsylvania. Others assist by helping at special events or by providing administrative support in our many country offices worldwide.
