National Domestic Violence Hotline

Each month, 19,500 domestic violence victims, their families and friends across the U.S. are provided with crisis intervention, referrals to local services and information in 170 languages, 24 hours a day. 800-799-7233; 800-787-3224 (TTY).

Why do we exist?

Approximately 1.5 million women are raped and/or physically assaulted by an intimate partner each year in the United States.  Because many victims are victimized more than once, the number of victimizations exceeds the number of victims.  Thus, approximately 4.8 million intimate partner rapes and physical assaults are perpetrated against U.S. women annually.  This is equivalent to 13,151 acts of violence committed by intimate partners each day in America. On average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country every day. (U.S. Department of Justice, Intimate Partner Violence, July 2000)  Behind every high profile, headline-drawing occurrence of battering or death, there are countless more women and children who are dealing with family violence on a daily basis.  Thousands of children are at risk each and every day as a result of family violence occurring in all corners of the country.

What have you accomplished?

In August 2003, the Hotline took its millionth call since its inception in 1995. Our database has grown from 2,000 service listings to 5,000. We have successfully increased public awareness efforts about domestic violence and the Hotline services through new partnerships with national companies such as Lifetime, Marie Claire, Liz Clairborne, Avon, Target and others.
