We help men journey out of homelessness through providing transitional shelter, nourishment, case management and recovery support.
How do you help people in my community?
St. Luke’s Shelter is a local organization, working with men and women in Washington, DC. We are strongly connected to the communities of upper northwest DC, though our shelter residents and kitchen students may come to us from across the District. We rely on local businesses, religious groups, civic organizations and, of course, individuals for the volunteer and financial support that make our services possible.
Why do you need my support?
While St. Luke’s Shelter receives small grants from private foundations, the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, and corporate and civic organizations, we rely on the generosity of individuals to ensure that we continue to respond to the needs of our homeless neighbors.
No gifts go unnoticed or unappreciated! We are the grateful stewards of meaningful contributions such as pocket change collected over time, proceeds from a five-year-old neighbor’s lemonade stand, house parties, and worship offerings, as well as gifts given in response to our quarterly mailings and year-end drive.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
We take seriously the stewardship of financial gifts, and apply unrestricted support toward the greatest need. St. Luke’s Shelter has yearly audits and prepares annual reports. A 12-member board of directors and a community of individual, corporate, and foundation supporters ensure our accountability.
Can I Volunteer? How?
YES! The compassion of our volunteers and the time and talents they share with us are vital to St. Luke’s Shelter. Volunteers prepare and share meals with shelter residents; serve as mentors, life and vocational skill teachers; and assist with community outreach and administrative needs of the organization.
