N Street Village

N Street Village has served homeless women since 1973.  Programs include day center, transitional and permanent housing, mental and physical health care and an education and employment center.

How do you help people in my community?

N Street Village is devoted solely to assisting women in the DC metropolitan area. The services we offer improve the lives of not only our clients, but also the District as a whole. It is in everyone’s best interest for all of the District’s residents to be sheltered, fed, educated, and supported.

N Street Village is also an exemplary member of our home within the District, the Logan Circle community, and has been honored by the Logan Circle Community Association and the Studio Theatre for our positive impact on the neighborhood. N Street Village has also been recognized by Mayor Adrian Fenty and other District leaders as a model agency for providing services to homeless individuals.

Why do you need my support?

Yes!  Your small gift can make an enormous difference for our women at N Street.  For example, a gift of $25 can provide hot breakfast for 20 women seeking shelter at our day center, and a gift of $100 can provide an entire week’s worth of services and support to a women living in our night shelter program.

Our programs are designed with the future in mind. We meet the basic needs of homeless women, but we also recognize the necessity of giving them the proper tools to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.  Our vision is that every woman deserves the opportunity to reach her highest level of self-sufficiency, and, through education and ongoing support, we provide her that opportunity.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

N Street Village offers an impressive array of services on a relatively small annual budget (roughly $3M), so every dollar truly counts at the Village.  N Street’s fiscal responsibility is perhaps best illustrated by our organizational response to the economic collapse. In the fall of 2008, just as the economy began to crumble, N Street put into action a contingency plan. A firing freeze was enacted, and all non-program spending was halted. The senior leadership team took voluntary pay cuts. And not a single N Street program closed. Our women continued to receive the same quality of services as always. The point is this: at N Street Village, the women we serve always come first, and your money, whenever possible, will always be used to directly impact the lives of these women.

Can I Volunteer? How?

Yes! Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of N Street Village and allow us to reach our women in new and exciting ways. The opportunities for volunteer involvement are as varied and unique as our volunteers themselves. Volunteers do everything from serving meals to leading exercise groups to teaching poetry classes. We have a number of ongoing opportunities (including preparing and serving meals, staying overnight in our shelter, and monitoring our learning lab, just to name a few), and our Wellness Center and Education and Employment Center staff are always eager to work with volunteers to develop ways for them to share their particular talents with our community.

Potential volunteers should contact Kate Akalonu, Manager of Volunteer and In-Kind Services, at 202.939.2096 or kakalonu@nstreetvillage.org to sign up for an orientation. Please check out our website (www.nstreetvillage.org/getinvolved/volunteer) for more information on volunteer opportunities.
