Maryknoll, the heart and hands of the U.S. Catholic Church overseas, shares the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all people and accompanies them in their struggle for justice and peace.
How do you help people in my community?
Maryknoll offers U.S. Catholics an opportunity to participate in the missionary activity of the U.S. Catholic Church. Since Christ calls each of us to be missionaries, to live Gospel values and to love one another as He loves us, Maryknoll offers an opportunity to directly serve overseas as a priest, Brother or lay missioner. If a person is unable to go abroad and serve, the work of Maryknoll can be supported through prayers and financial assistance. Maryknoll’s particular charism is overseas mission in service to the poor – all done in the name of the millions of Catholics comprising the U.S. Catholic Church. As Pope John Paul II has stated,
“It is not enough to discover Christ – you must bring Him to others! The world is one great mission land, even in countries of long-standing Christian tradition.”
Additionally, Father Raymond Finch, Superior General of Maryknoll has noted,
“More than ever the world needs to hear the Gospel message. We have been called to witness this message of love and salvation to all peoples…”
Why do you need my support?
For more than 90 years, Maryknoll Missioners have been planting the seeds of Christ’s love in places where it was not known before or where there was no one else to do it. In the name of Jesus, Maryknollers have been working at the cutting edge of justice and peace issues affecting marginated peoples of the world. Many small gifts from U.S. Catholics and other friends combine to carry out a multitude of pastoral and apostolic programs in service to the poor. Good stewardship of the resources entrusted to our care is central priority in all that we do. Maryknoll’s finances are audited annually by a certified public accountant. Full financial disclosure is available upon request. Maryknoll complies with all reporting and disclosure requirements of the National Better Business Bureau. Almost $.90 of every dollar raised is allocated to our mission work in the field.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
Maryknoll strictly adheres to any donor designation or restriction placed on a gift and operates under an approved fund accounting system, which is audited annually. Each mission region and department prepares an annual budget that is reviewed and approved by top management. Each budget is monitored monthly. Accounting controls are in place and financial statements are generated monthly. Professional investment counsel is employed and evaluates regularly. Administrative and fundraising expenses are well-below accepted not-for-profit guidelines. Maryknoll endorses the principles and guidelines of fundraising established by the National Catholic Development Conference and these govern all fundraising activities. We at Maryknoll are stewards of all we receive and remain committed to use such resources responsibly in our lifelong work of building up the Kingdom of God.
