Established in 1979, the Foundation is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. Museums, fellowships, awards, publications, new National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Why do we exist?
The United States Marine Corps is unique among America's armed forces in that the teaching of Marine Corps history is an integral part of the training of all Marines. The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is the only organization whose sole mission is to preserve and share the history, legacy, and traditions of the U.S. Marine Corps, honor the Corps' sacrifices and contributions to the development and preservation of our Nation's freedom, and educate and inspire the American public. Without a clear understanding of the Marine Corps' historical role in preserving freedom around the world, today's American's cannot appreciate the many ways in which the modern Marine Corps continues to serve Americans and freedom-seekers worldwide.
What have you accomplished?
Between 1979 and 1997, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation provided
funding for hundreds of doctoral and masters thesis fellowships and research grants to students studying the Marine Corps' role in American history. It funded an active annual awards program that recognizes superior accomplishment in the areas of Marine Corps writing, exhibitry, videography, combat art and photography. It provided support for historic preservation and enhancement of the Home of the Commandants, a building in Washington, D.C. on the National Register of Historic Places. It provided support for the United States Marine Band, "The President's Own."
While continuing to fund all the programs above, in 1997 the Foundation took on a new project when it formed a partnership with the U.S. Marine Corps to create the Marine Corps Heritage Center at Quantico, Virginia. From General Michael Hagee, Commandant of the Marine Corps:
“Creation of the new Marine Corps Heritage Center, with the inspiring National Museum of the Marine Corps as its centerpiece, turns the dreams of thousands of Marine veterans into reality. This magnificent place represents our heritage and timeless esprit de corps and finally allows us to tell our story as we would have it told – through the eyes of Marines.”
