Founded in 1945, LWR works with partner organizations in 35 countries to help people grow food, improve health, strengthen communities, end conflict, build livelihoods and recover from disasters. Good stewardship.
Why do we exist?
LWR alleviates human suffering caused by natural disasters, conflict or poverty. LWR helps people meet their basic needs for food, health care, education and employment. LWR works in partnership with indigenous organizations to increase their skills and ability to make lasting improvements in their communities. LWR nurtures the vision of all people living with dignity and justice in harmony with God's creation.
What have you accomplished?
LWR supports an innovative health care program in India which dramatically reduces malnutrition, provides clean drinking water and sanitation, and provides safe and voluntary family planning. People from over 100 countries have visited this amazing project! What visitors find most remarkable is that the village health workers are mostly women, outcasts and were illiterate when they started in the program. They have overcome major obstacles to become leaders and role models in their communities. Muktabai Pol, one of the village health workers, received an award on behalf of the program. Lighting a small lamp, she said, "I am like this lamp, lighting the lamp of better health. Workers like me can light another and another and thus encircle the whole earth."
