Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA)

A nonsectarian provider helping children, adults, seniors and families meet emotional, social and physical challenges for more than 118 years; offering counseling and career management, career services, in-home support, hospice and social services.

How do you help people in my community?

We provide a wide range of counseling, educational and employment and career services, special needs services, in-home support for seniors, hospice, nursing care and other social services.

  • Child, adolescent, adult and family counseling and care coordination
  • Senior services, home care and home support
  • Hospice care
  • Special needs and deaf and hard of hearing services, care coordination and supported employment services
  • Professional trainings and courses in the community
  • Employment and career services
  • Specialized community services (volunteer, synagogue liaison, jewish chaplaincy services, adoption, educational scholarships)

JSSA offers services in our offices at Fallsgrove and Montrose Road, Rockville, MD; Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD; Fairfax, VA.; and in Jewish congregations and schools throughout the metropolitan area.

Why do you need my support?

JSSA is one of only a few agencies providing high-quality services to families and individuals regardless of their ability to pay. That means we truly rely on the generosity and caring of donors like you to underwrite our work.

Your support helps subsidize the most critical mental health, employment, emergency financial assistance and social services for the individuals and families in greatest need in our community.   Even small gifts, combined with other contributions, make an important difference in the lives of JSSA’s clients. They create a safety net of services for our community.

Our commitment, with your financial support, assures that troubled children receive the best mental health services, regardless of parents' income. It guarantees that a frail senior on a limited income can remain safely in his/her home.  It means that the teenager, deaf since birth, has access to a therapist who can communicate in sign language to help him tackle adolescent challenges.

$18 – Covers materials for a bullying prevention workshop in a local school

$25 – Subsidizes a social activity club for young adults with Asperger’s syndrome who have difficulty making friends and typically become isolated at home

$60 – Funds a one hour, one-on-one session of career coaching for an individual who recently lost a job

$125– Provides an hour of counseling for divorcing parents whose child is struggling to adjust

$250 – Underwrites a year-long support group for parents who have lost a child

$1,000 – Subsidizes 4 months of weekly therapy for a single mother coping with depression

Last year, nearly 35,000 individuals and families people turned to JSSA when they needed help coping with life’s most difficult challenges. Your gift makes a critical difference.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

Charity Navigator, America’s leading independent charity evaluator, has given JSSA its top rating—four stars— in recognition of sound fiscal management. The four-star rating represents a major achievement for JSSA in today’s lagging economy, where demand for services is rising, while charitable dollars grow more scarce.

Further evidence of JSSA’s prudent use of charitable dollars is this telling statistic -- 87.8 cents of your dollar goes directly to supporting the families and individuals who seek JSSA’s care.
