Help us find a cure for diabetes. Through research, we can save lives of children and adults who suffer from diabetes and its devastating complications.
Why do we exist?
Our mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. With a narrow focus and clearly defined goals, JDRF uses both scientific and lay review processes to set priorities for research funding and to make decisions about where to direct and maintain funding.
Our grant distribution decisions act as catalysts within the scientific community to move basic academic research through clinical trials to the point where viable cures can become widely available to the mission of people around the world with type 1 diabetes. JDRF provides money for vital research to find a cure for diabetes and improve the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes while a cure is sought.
JDRF is also unique because we are volunteer driven and extremely cost efficient. Every year more than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. While we search for a cure, JDRF provides support for people of all ages affected by type 1 diabetes.
What have you accomplished?
JDRF as an organization has given more than $1.5 billion to research since our founding. With more than 24 million Americans affected by diabetes, the research, much of it occurring right here in San Diego and across California, is having an impact on both the economy and the health of our residents. Research breakthroughs are occurring and making a difference. Recently a major clinical trial funded by JDRF found that people with type 1 diabetes who used continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices to help manage their disease experienced significant improvements in blood sugar control. Some of that research was done here in San Diego and the impacts it could have on preventing complications is significant. Families have told us that CGM technology has made their quality of life much better. Until a cure is found, we need to keep people with diabetes safe and as healthy as possible.
