A leading international organization dedicated to advancing human rights for everyone, everywhere to end discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
How do you help people in my community?
The religious right wing in North America is not only active in promoting homophobia here – they are also putting their time and money into efforts to export homophobia to religious groups in other countries. They know that it will be easier to maintain intolerance and discrimination in the U.S. if progress for gays and lesbians is held back in other countries. Also, we can learn and gain from the successes of others countries. The U.S. is not the leader in progressive legislation protecting gays and lesbians -- both Spain and Canada have recently passed legislation allowing same-sex partners to marry and numerous countries have enacted national legislation prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation – and the U.S. is not among them. We, in the U.S., have much to learn from activists in these countries who have successfully fought for their rights. Advances in other countries have already assisted efforts in the U.S. In Lawrence v. Texas, the recent U.S. case striking down sodomy laws as unconstitutional, international cases were sited in support of this decision.
