The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC)

A leading international organization dedicated to advancing human rights for everyone, everywhere to end discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

How do you help people in my community?

The religious right wing in North America is not only active in promoting homophobia here – they are also putting their time and money into efforts to export homophobia to religious groups in other countries.  They know that it will be easier to maintain intolerance and discrimination in the U.S. if progress for gays and lesbians is held back in other countries.

Also, we can learn and gain from the successes of others countries.  The U.S. is not the leader in progressive legislation protecting gays and lesbians -- both Spain and Canada have recently passed legislation allowing same-sex partners to marry and numerous countries have enacted national legislation prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation – and the U.S. is not among them.  We, in the U.S., have much to learn from activists in these countries who have successfully fought for their rights.  Advances in other countries have already assisted efforts in the U.S.  In Lawrence v. Texas, the recent U.S. case striking down sodomy laws as unconstitutional, international cases were sited in support of this decision.

Why do you need my support?

IGLHRC is the only US organization with a mission dedicated to advancing the human rights and dignity of all people regardless of their sexual orientation, gender expression or HIV status across the globe.  IGLHRC works to end torture, imprisonment and discrimination against lesbians, gay men and other sexual minorities.  IGLHRC has earned the trust of hundreds of grassroots gay and lesbian groups worldwide, who keep us informed of developments in their areas and seek our assistance in their struggles.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

IGLHRC closely monitors our administrative expenditures ensuring that your dollars go directly to work on our programs to advance the human rights of all people regardless of sexual orientation, gender expression and HIV status.

Can I Volunteer? How?

Yes, volunteers help with our activism on human rights issues, provide office assistance, support our fundraising efforts by hosting benefit events and selling tickets to our human rights awards reception, A Celebration of Courage.  For more information, please e-mail nlevitt@iglhrc.org.
