Hospice Foundation of America

We support organizations and efforts which assist terminally ill patients and their families through the dying process in a less painful and more caring manner.

How do you help people in my community?

What would you do if your doctor told you that your loved one has an incurable illness and might live only a few more months? After the initial shock, with the help of the Charitable Choices guide or the Internet, you might find HFA’s 800 number or website, where for over 20 years HFA specialists have provided thousands of individuals with difficult to find answers in a private, rapid and interactive manner.

What are the medical issues?
Will my loved one be in pain?
How will I cope with my impending loss?
Isn't it cruel to withhold food and water from my dying loved one?

Dear Dr. Lamers [HFA Medical Consultant]: "...not only were your responses comforting, they gave me a working vocabulary that I could use to understand the disease process and its aftermath.... I'm so glad you were... at the Foundation. Thank you again for everything. I cannot say enough about the quality of your help."

Thank you for your support. It is critical to maintaining our ability to provide rapid, comprehensive assistance to people in medical, emotional, spiritual or psychological crisis.

Why do you need my support?

We are neither a membership organization nor a trade group. We do not have dues.  We are a grass roots organization supported by small donations from individuals, usually friends and family members of hospice patients, as well as people who just want to support better care for the dying. Donations to the foundation are used exclusively to provide resources and tools for hospices around the nation working in their individual communities.  All gifts are welcome, no matter the size, because it is equally important that hospice be seen as having very broad support across the nation.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

Hospice Foundation of America is governed by a Board of Directors with the responsibility of oversight to ensure that funds are used in the way in which they were intended, according to our Charter, By-Laws and Mission. We undergo an independent audit each year and make our audit and tax return available to anyone who requests them.

Can I Volunteer? How?

Emphatically YES. Hospice is the only medical system which is required by law to have a volunteer component.  Volunteers have been called the "Heart of Hospice."   For an informative free brochure on Volunteering In Hospice, or for the number of a hospice which needs and values your services, call us at 1-800-854-3402.
