Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia

Service-based housing ministry working with the community to build decent, affordable housing for those in need. Our unique approach relies on sweat equity, donor generosity, volunteer labor and interest-free mortgages.

How do you help people in my community?

HFHNV builds homes and dreams one family at a time. By strengthening families, we also help to strengthen neighborhoods, communities and Northern Virginia overall. New homeowner families gain access to good schools, better jobs, reliable transportation and other needed services.

Why do you need my support?

Without HFHNV, the families we serve could never dream of a home of their own - most would remain homeless or in substandard housing, with no means to break the cycle of poverty in their lives. HFHNV gives these families hope and a hand up. By donating funds to our work, donors get the satisfaction of knowing they are helping to turn the dream of homeownership into reality for their neighbors in need.

Habitat's approach to partnership is the unique key to our success. Families selected to become homeowners work side-by-side with volunteers to build their homes and then pay back the material costs of construction with a twenty-year, interest-free mortgage loan. HFHNV also provides financial counseling and an ongoing mentoring relationship to its homeowner families to help them succeed as new homeowners. Our volunteers and community partners come from all areas of life: whether seasoned or unskilled, faithful or faith-filled, young or simply young at heart, we have the joy of connecting thousands of volunteers to our mission each year.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

HFHNV's dedicated Board of Directors partners with our staff and standing committees to manage our operation according to annual budgets and project timelines. Our overhead rate is low and our audits are thorough; our small staff also works closely with the community and our volunteers to leverage existing resources. We actively raise funds for our projects in advance of construction, and we keep our building costs low by using consistent, quality materials from reputable manufacturers.

Can I Volunteer? How?

HFHNV welcomes worksite volunteers, committee members, and community speakers on an ongoing basis. Most committees meet once a month on weekday evenings. Our website, http://www.hfhnv.org, has full information about our committees and our activities. Our Director of Volunteers, Steve Greene, also welcomes questions at sgreene@hfhnv.org or 703.521.9890 ext. 101.
