Hebrew Home of Greater Washington

Essential nursing home care, compassionate Alzheimer's care and highly successful rehab services. Plus retirement living, outpatient services, research. Open to all. Your contribution counts.

Why do we exist?

They are the grocers, tailors, doctors, lawyers, and homemakers who proudly moved their families to new suburban subdivisions. Who worked to pay for music lessons, scout uniforms, and Hebrew school. Who today are proud beyond measure of their children and grandchildren. Today they are living and recovering at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington.

Since 1910, the mission of the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington has been to fulfill the Jewish value of caring for the elderly, particularly the most frail and vulnerable, through a comprehensive array of services. What began as a volunteer effort in a small downtown row house has grown to become a state-of-the-art nursing and rehabilitation center which shares a wooded campus in suburban Maryland with other Jewish organizations and agencies. But the Hebrew Home has never outgrown its commitment to enrich the cutting-edge care we provide with the essentials of tradition, compassion, and love.

Generation after generation of Washingtonians has turned to the Hebrew Home for help. Some of our residents stay for only a short time for intensive rehabilitation therapy or acute nursing care to help speed their recovery and return them to their own homes. Those with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia, or with complex care needs, receive secure, compassionate long-term care. End-of-life care is also provided to assure comfort and peace of mind.

The not-for-profit Hebrew Home is a vital part of the community. Our promise to the elderly is to provide the care and comfort they need for as long as it's needed.

All Hebrew Home and affiliated programs are open to all in the community. While the Home welcomes community support, donations are never required as a condition of admission.

What have you accomplished?

We help more than 1,200 seniors and their families every day:

"First, we made excuses. We thought she was just getting forgetful. Then, we realized she was really in danger. The Hebrew Home has provided first-rate care, and we can enjoy our visits with Mom again."

It takes both the right programs and the right environment to treat the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease. We help families find the peace of mind they seek, through compassionate care, a secure environment, a full schedule of activities on each unit and support for families.

"The therapy, that's the best thing that ever happened to me. I wouldn't be where I am without the Hebrew Home. I was able to walk out with no cane, no crutches. And I had a good time here, really enjoyed it, even got my nails done."

Life can be turned upside down by a stroke, a broken hip. For the patient and family, this can be an anxious time. At the Hebrew Home, we respond quickly. With patience and skillful care, our rehabilitative and therapeutic treatments help adults of all ages get back on their feet and on with their lives. Our Rehabilitation and Special Care Center therapists practice the latest techniques in physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy, coupled with skilled nursing and medical care to speed recovery. Then, careful discharge planning helps insure success at home.

At the age of 85, Lou P. came to live at the Hebrew Home. Until then, it hadn't occurred to him how much living he had left to do.

Here, Lou has formed abiding friendships with the volunteers, staff and other residents. With individualized care comes independence and social opportunities that Lou didn't dream of before, all in a community that feels like home.

Each resident receives compassionate, professional care, at the level he or she needs, with the attitude that at any age and in any condition, life is worth living. The medical, rehabilitative and therapeutic services here are among the best in the nation.

We are more than a nursing home: we offer adult day programs at the Misler Senior Day Center (in partnership with JCA), senior housing at Revitz House, and independent and assisted living at Ring House. Our Hirsh Health Center provides medical care and rehabilitative therapies on an outpatient basis to those living in the community, and a respected Research Institute investigates .
