Offers local girls a variety of programs including after-school troops, spring and summer day camps, summer resident camps and special events that help them grow to their full potential.
How do you help people in my community?
Girl Scouts are everywhere! Our troops and summer day programs reach girls in temporary living shelters who have few chances at childhood; trained bilingual volunteers promote Girl Scouting in linguistically isolated neighborhoods; and financial assistance, nearly $140,000 last year, removes any barriers to participation.
In total the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital serves 45,000 girls and 22,000 adult volunteers in the greater Washington metropolitan area. Not only are these Girl Scout members growing and learning, but they in turn are active members of your community, contributing countless hours of community service in your neighborhood.
Why do you need my support?
Community support of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital ensures that Girl Scouting is offered to everyone and that we can continue to provide cutting-edge program for all girls aged 5-18. Nearly a third of our membership is considered low-income or at-risk youth, and rely on our extensive financial assistance and outreach support. Your contribution expands these and other Girl Scout programs. Your support also ensures that the cost of membership remains low for each one of our members, which makes Girl Scouting a viable opportunity for all who wish to participate.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
All funds received from the United Way and Combined Federal Campaign are used to support local Girl Scout program. A full 89% of our operating budget is used for direct services and programs for girls; the remaining 11% supports costs inherent in administration and fundraising.
The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital is audited annually by an external accounting firm and financial reports are available to the public.
Can I Volunteer? How?
Volunteering in Girl Scouting provides meaningful and satisfying opportunities for over 22,000 adults who know that the girls in their community benefit from services they provide. Each volunteer is screened to match her/his skills and talents with positions available and all volunteers are provided with training to carry out their specific duties.
If you have a particular skill, talent, or interest you want to share, please call the Girl Scout Council of the Nations Capital at (202) 237-1670 or 1-800-523-7898.
