Food For The Poor, Inc. - Poverty

Since 1982, this interdenominational Christian ministry has provided aid to the destitute in the Caribbean and Latin America.  FFP ships food, builds homes, drills wells, provides education, medical care and skills training.  Pilgrimages available.

Why do we exist?

Now celebrating its 30th year of operation, Food For The Poor is an interdenominational Christian relief and development organization working primarily in 17 countries in the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States to assist the poorest of the poor. Our ministry is shaped by the belief that Christ is alive and can be served directly by serving those in greatest need. (Matthew 25:40)

Food For The Poor exists as God’s instrument to help the materially poor and to renew the poor in spirit. Our work in the Caribbean and Latin America empowers local churches, clergy and lay leaders with goods and supplies to assist those who are living in desperate poverty. This network of partners in-country ensures that aid reaches those who need it the most.

What have you accomplished?

In 2011, Food For The Poor shipped 3,319 containers of aid valued at $868 million, and built 6,294 housing units.

Since our inception in 1982, we have sent more that $9 billion in aid, and built more than 77,000 housing units for people desperately in need. Food For The Poor works directly with churches, the clergy, missionaries and other nongovernmental organizations in the countries where we serve. Food For The Poor has an expansive network of island-wide distribution hubs, and supports thousands of faith-based partners in feeding and assisting the poorest of the poor. We ask what’s needed and then supply the requested items. This direct distribution method helps assure that only those items that are actually needed are shipped; it also helps keep operational costs to a minimum.

Food For The Poor does much more than help in time of disasters. We feed millions of hungry individuals; we drill life-giving water wells for those who otherwise wouldn’t have clean drinking water; we provide skills training and micro-enterprise opportunities that enable the poor to work; and we give children an education that will enable them to break free from the cycle of poverty that has ensnared generations.
