Food for the Poor, Inc. - Poverty

Since 1982, interdenominational Christian charity provides aid to the destitute in the Caribbean and Latin America.  FFP ships food, builds homes, drills wells, provides education, medical care and skills training.  Pilgrimages available.

How do you help people in my community?

As an international Christian ministry, we are able to help our brothers and sisters in those countries nearest to the United States.  The face of poverty in the Caribbean and Central America, which are just hours from our doorsteps, is overwhelming in its need.  The very basics of life that we in the United States take for granted, such as housing, food, water, medical care, education and emergency relief are totally lacking for so many of our nearest neighbors.

During 2003, Food For The Poor completed a wide array of projects throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, from supplying water to poor communities, to building housing and orphanages, providing vocational training and delivering medical supplies.

Why do you need my support?

The work that Food For The Poor accomplishes in the Caribbean Basin can only become a reality through the generosity of those who like ourselves, have compassion for God’s people and want to become God’s hand at work easing the suffering of our poorest brothers and sisters.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

Food For The Poor has continually maintained a remarkable efficiency level in all of its operations.  During 2003, the administrative cost ratio was the lowest ever, an impressive 4.7%.  Forbes magazine rated Food For The Poor as having a 96 % fundraising efficiency rating as well as a 95% charitable commitment ratio.

Food For The Poor has grown every year, and this expansion has provided the opportunity for additional purchasing and shipping efficiencies.  Ministry Watch and Charity Navigator both rated Food For The Poor with their highest efficiency ratings, and the increasing amounts of USDA and USAID grants reflect the government’s satisfaction with the control and distribution of the food commodities.

Can I Volunteer? How?

Food For The Poor offers our donors the opportunity to travel with us on pilgrimages to the Third World at a nominal cost, and experience first-hand the extreme needs that exist.  These journeys inevitably become life-changing experiences.

Because of the high unemployment rate of the countries in which we serve, it is important to create opportunities for employment through our home building projects.  However, we occasionally have volunteer opportunities available.  Many organizations have adopted communities in the areas we serve, and become partners with Food For The Poor in bringing assistance to these areas.

Additionally, Food For The Poor sponsors many fund-raising events throughout the United States, where our donors can participate.
