Food for the Poor, Inc. - Jails/Prisons

FFP supports music, athletic and job-training programs in prisons of the Caribbean and Latin America. FFP releases and rehabilitates prisoners owing small fines for minor offenses they cannot pay.

Why do we exist?

Food For The Poor exists as God’s instrument to help the materially poor and to renew the poor in spirit.  Our assistance efforts in the Caribbean and Latin America empower local churches, clergy and lay leaders with goods and supplies to assist those who are living in desperate poverty.

What have you accomplished?

Food for The Poor sponsors a prison release program annually during the Christmas and Easter season.  Under this program, Food For The Poor provides the money to free prisoners charged with non-violent offenses, and has assisted a total of 700 persons since its inception in 2000.  The prisoners who are released have been incarcerated because of non-violent crimes, such as stealing food.  In addition to providing an aftercare program to assist the prisoners in reestablishing their lives, Food For The Poor also assists in the prison system by providing sports equipment, clothing, medical supplies, basic sanitary facilities and bedding.

According to Robin Mahfood, president of Food For The Poor, “The prison program is our response to the Lord’s command to visit and care for those who are in prison.  The men who are selected for release have demonstrated a real desire to become productive members of society, and only lack the means to accomplish their own release.  We can show Christ’s love in this way, and demonstrate to them that we truly believe in their restoration.”

How do you help people in my community? Why do you need my support?
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it? Can I Volunteer? How?
