Working since 1947 to save America's endangered animals and their threatened habitat for future generations through public education, citizen advocacy, legal action and scientific research.
Why do we exist?
Founded in 1947, Defenders of Wildlife is one of the country’s leaders in science-based, results-oriented wildlife conservation. We stand out in our commitment to saving imperiled wildlife and championing the Endangered Species Act, the landmark law that protects them.
In 2009, over sixty years later, Defenders employs over 150 dedicated professionals and is supported by more than one million supporters nationwide. Our organization has evolved to take on the task of preserving our nation’s native wildlife species and habitats. We work to protect and restore America’s native wildlife, safeguard habitat, resolve conflicts, work across international borders and educate and mobilize the public.
Our nation’s wildlife and wild places are precious gifts that enrich our planet and sustain us that are disappearing at an alarming rate.
What have you accomplished?
Since our inception, Defenders has stood firm in our commitment to saving endangered wildlife in North America. Defenders’ is well known for helping to reintroduce the gray wolf back into Yellowstone National Park in 1995. We are currently in federal court to restore protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies, threatened by state officials that wish to slaughter them. Defenders successfully won renewed protections in 2008. You can read more success stories on our website here at: http://defenders.org/take_action/success_stories/index.php .
