We empower low-income working families to buy affordable, volunteer-build Habitat homes, revitalizing their neighborhoods and strengthening their futures. Help us complete our current 53-home development.
Why do we exist?
Utilizing volunteers and the sweat equity of prospective homeowners, DC Habitat for Humanity builds affordable, homes with interest-free mortgages in the nation’s capital. A Christian-based organization, DC Habitat is trying to break the cycle of poverty by giving low-income individuals and families the opportunity to become homeowners. We offer supportive assistance and informal counseling for prospective and current homeowners, as well as community development efforts in the surrounding neighborhoods.
DC Habitat for Humanity is unique because it offers more than a ‘band-aid’ solution to District residents living in poverty by working in partnership with our participating families. With the added stability of homeownership, our families have become neighborhood leaders and have gotten better jobs. The children have also benefited with improved school performance and better health. These outcomes would not be possible without the partnership principle that is essential to our organization’s mission.
What have you accomplished?
Since 1988, DC Habitat for Humanity has been building affordable, resource and energy-efficient homes in our nation’s capital, providing safe, decent housing for 59 District families.
One of the homeowners who life has been changed is Yvonne Walker. She was living in public housing when she moved into her Skyland development home in Anacostia in 1999. Yvonne has always loved children and had a dream of owning her own home where she could operate a family day care business.
Through DC Habitat homeownership, she has been able to provide a very much needed community service of good quality accessible childcare to the people of Anacostia. Ms. Walker is also the foster mother for two school-age children.
