The mission of the Civil War Preservation Trust is the preservation of America's significant Civil War battlefields by protecting the land and educating the public about their role in our nation's history. 1-888-606-1400.
Why do we exist?
The purpose of the Civil War Preservation Trust is to acquire and protect historically significant battlefield land in the United States. We are the only national nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing these hallowed battlegrounds, where countless young Americans gave what Abraham Lincoln described as
the last full measure of devotion. Every year, thousands of acres of battlefield land are lost to development the Civil War Preservation Trust is dedicated to stemming this tide of sprawl.
What have you accomplished?
Since the Civil War Preservation Trust was first founded in 1987, the organization has rescued 23,000 acres of hallowed ground at some of the most famous battlefields in history Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fort Donelson, Gettysburg, Shiloh, and Vicksburg, just to name a few. Most of this work, approximately 15,000 acres, has been saved in the past six years. The Civil War Preservation Trust has been able to save these sites by leveraging private donations with grants from federal, state and local government sources. In fact, since 1999, the Civil War Preservation Trust has saved Civil War battlefield land at 3 times the rate of the National Park Service.
But our work is far from done. Each and every day 30 acres of important, historic battlefield land are lost forever. We estimate that at this rate, we only have five to ten years in which to protect for future generations the sites where American history was made.
