Comprehensive health care for sick, homeless men and women and assistance in addressing critical issues to break the cycle of homelessness: 24-hour medical care, food services, addictions treatment and housing placement.
How do you help people in my community?
In addition to our medical services, our case management unit helps patients obtain income, insurance, and other benefits, and works with patients to find suitable housing upon discharge. We know that over 60 percent of our patients leave Christ House for transitional or permanent housing instead of returning to the streets or emergency shelters.
Substance abuse counseling, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, drug and alcohol classes, and HIV/AIDS education are also provided for patients and former patients during the week. The 12 week, in-house New Day Treatment Program is available to all those who suffer with chronic substance abuse. New Day is led by our Certified Addictions Counselor.
We also provide meals, transportation to medical and other appointments, recreational and cultural activities, permanent supportive housing, and a host of other services that are designed to support homeless persons in their journey toward independence and stability.
Why do you need my support?
Over 60 percent of our funding comes from individuals, churches, businesses, associations and community organizations who contribute through our annual giving program and the United Way (#8385) and Combined Federal Campaign (#34256). A number of local and national foundations also support the program needs at Christ House. All gifts from individuals and other sources make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.
Sick, homeless persons who are in need of 24-hour medical care in a residential setting can only find it at Christ House. Our multi-faceted approach fosters self-reliance because each patient learns the importance of bring part of a community. Our goal is that patients will leave Christ House with a new sense of hope and dignity, be able to work and live independently in the community.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
Christ House is cost effective. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, a stay in a hospital in the Northeast in 2008 (the most recent year available) lasted an average of 5.1 days and cost $9,612, or $1,885 per day. The average charges for that stay were $31,885, or $6,252 per day.
Christ House served 307 admissions in 2008 and provided 9,905 patient days of care at the cost of only $290 per patient day! Theses costs included medical care, case management, transportation, food, housing, and a host of other wrap-around support services.
