Mission: to improve the quality of life of United States Military Veterans and others who have spinal cord dysfunction through the use of education, advocacy, research, communication, sports and recreation.
Why do we exist?
Cal-Diego PVA is the San Diego Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans Association, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for veterans of the United States Armed Forces who have a spinal cord injury or disease.
The Chapter has a very unique relationship not only with its members, but with the hospital staff at the Spinal Cord Injury Unit and the local service office. The Chapter’s goal is to work in unison; insuring premium service care is given at all times, day or night. Often, the Chapter is the first to hear of concerns regarding a patient and works in a collaborative effort to make sure certain needs of patients are met.
Cal-Diego PVA is an active member of the community involved in education, advocacy, research, sports and recreation, and communication.
What have you accomplished?
Cal-Diego PVA is proactive at all levels of government to protect the rights and benefits of our members as well as those of all citizens with disabilities. For example, Cal–Diego PVA members have been involved with the local transit, building, and planning departments of San Diego to ensure that our city and county are accessible to all disabled persons.
During the San Diego fires in October 2007, Cal-Diego PVA utilized its member call tree to reach all members who lived in any of the affected areas, to make sure they were safe and find out if they needed assistance. Three members were severely affected by the fires and Cal-Diego PVA worked painstakingly to get funds, food, and medical supplies to these members.
