Using the exciting medium of space exploration, our mission is to create positive experiences for students that inspire them to pursue studies and careers in science, engineering and technology.
Why do we exist?
Challenger Center for Space Science Education was founded by the families of the 51-L Challenger Space Shuttle mission. 51-L was the Teacher in Space mission, and the families wanted to continue the crew’s unfinished mission by creating a “living memorial” to them.
Today, an international network of Challenger Learning Centers transforms students into astronauts and engineers and encourages them to develop a life-long interest in science, mathematics, and technology. Challenger Learning Centers use space science as a theme to create an exciting learning environment that exposes students to the challenges and successes of teamwork, problem solving, communication, and decision-making. We believe that these positive learning experiences motivate many students to pursue careers in science or technology fields.
What have you accomplished?
Since the organization began in 1986, more than 50 Challenger Learning Centers have opened across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Almost 8 million students, teachers, and parents have experienced a Challenger Center program—either through its Learning Centers, community-based programming, classroom curriculum products, or online.
Educators attend professional development workshops on a full array of hands-on and minds-on programs, and they bring what they learn back to their classrooms. Students visit Challenger Learning Centers, and experience first hand what it’s like to live and work in space. Families have the opportunity to experience the wonders of space science through community outreach programs that are offered throughout the United States.
