Cares for the hungry and homeless of the world by providing food, medicine, encouragement and hope. Defends the oppressed and persecuted by promoting human rights and religious freedom.
Why do we exist?
The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is a fellowship of 214 Baptist conventions and unions comprising a membership of more than 37 million baptized believers and a community of 105 million. The Baptist World Alliance began in London, England, in 1905 at the first Baptist World Congress and works worldwide to defend human rights and religious freedom, provide aid to the hungry, the refugee, victims of natural disasters and war and to bring Christian hope and fellowship to Baptists in 214 Conventions and unions around the world. The work of the Alliance is not limited to those who are part of the Baptist family. We are concerned for all the people in the world since they are created in the image of God. The BWA network connects and unites Baptists of all languages, cultures and traditions. By working with our international partners we create a large pool of indigenous human, material and spiritual resources that help to alleviate the suffering of the world and create sustainable development. The Baptist World Alliance plays such a unique role in our world that it has been said if the BWA didn’t exist we would have to create it!
What have you accomplished?
The Baptist World Alliance responds immediately whenever disaster strikes the world. We are providing aid in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than 250,000 displaced persons are suffering. We are continuing aid to those who suffered from Hurricanes Hanna, Gustav, and Ike in the Caribbean and USA. The BWA has pledged to help raise nearly US$2 million for relief in Myanmar. We are also continuing support for programs to alleviate starvation in Africa and elsewhere, to provide HIV/AIDS education and medicines, and to support agricultural and safe water improvements in many areas of the world. Our NGO seat before the United Nations allows us to speak out for religious freedom and human rights against oppressive governments and ethnic conflicts.
