Black Student Fund

The Fund provides access to equitable education by providing scholarships to black children, particularly low-income children attending independent schools.  We also provide essential support services, food, clothing, school supplies, rent, medical expenses. 

How do you help people in my community?

We are part of the community. The Black Student Fund has offices within the area and we are accessible to the public. We do free consulting and will provide anyone with information about educational resources and options.

Why do you need my support?

Your gift, regardless of the amount, will make a difference in the lives of black children. Every dime is utilized and is important for helping the children, from purchasing a box of crayons, books for school, a needed winter coat, eyeglasses or food, to providing children with the opportunity to attend academic and recreational summer camps away from the city.

How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?

In order to conserve costs, we have chosen not to move into an expensive executive office downtown, but instead we have maintained our offices in an affordable area within and accessible to the community. The Black Student Fund has a staff of nine professionals who provide services to over 27,000 people annually. Our equipment and supplies are often used and donated, and our administration costs is only 8% of our budget for 1998.

Can I Volunteer? How?

Yes. Volunteers are welcome and appreciated. We can use your help with responding to over 400 phone calls we receive per week and assisting with mailings to the public. Volunteers would be helpful in assisting students with shopping for necessary school or camp supplies with gift certificates provided by the Black Student Fund.
