Black Student Fund

BSF provides access to equitable education, providing scholarships to black children, particularly low-income students attending independent schools.  We also provide support services, food, clothing, school supplies, rent, medical expenses.

Why do we exist?

The Black Student Fund (BSF) exists to assure that black students and families have equal access to EVERY educational opportunity as well as to assist students in managing and understanding systems so they can achieve their goals and attend any college they choose regardless of racial or economic opposition.

The Black Student Fund has a unique history of providing comprehensive support services in combination with scholarships enabling students to concentrate on their studies and achieve academic success.  Our longevity has allowed us to document and record consistent success in fulfilling our mission.

We are meeting the educational needs of black children as well as the need of the larger community for information and understanding of the educational systems and process.  BSF assists with the basic needs of students and their families such as food, clothing, and shelter.

The Black Student Fund provides support and guidance to help students succeed and have access to powerful educational options.  The BSF is a strong organization that has proven its commitment to students, families, schools, teachers and the community.

What have you accomplished?

We pioneered desegregation within independent schools and opened doors for black children and adults. We are responsible for over 60% of black faculty hired within independent schools throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. The Black Student Fund has provided scholarships to over 3,000 black children influencing and changing their lives. We have led the way to make equity in education a reality. The Fund brought systematic and effective institutional change to schools. Many of our students come from one parent households and are the first in their family to attend and graduate from college. Through our Institute for Equity Race & Education, we have improved cross-racial communications amongst teachers, faculty, administration and school heads, enabling them to understand and identify the educational needs and circumstance of black children

Our services reach over 27,000 people annually throughout Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The Black Student Fund provides educational information to everyone, regardless of race or economical status.. In order to maintain the dignity and confidentiality of students and their families we do not publicize or release information about their circumstances.

How do you help people in my community? Why do you need my support?
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it? Can I Volunteer? How?
