Anacostia Watershed Society

Restoring the Anacostia River to a swimmable, fishable condition by engaging volunteers in environmental stewardship activities, advocating for healthier local neighborhoods and teaching more about the natural world around us.

Why do we exist?

AWS works with community leaders for environmental justice in the Anacostia neighborhoods near the river. We sponsor river and community cleanup / fix-ups, tree plantings and other volunteer action projects available to local residents.

What have you accomplished?

The society has worked with local community leaders to protect the Anacostia community from four large intrusive development projects. AWS organizes and supports self-help neighborhood improvements projects that also help restore the Anacostia river.
