How do you help people in my community?
The Foundation has a national comprehensive Alzheimer’s Information Program, the heart of which is the Foundation’s website, www.ALZinfo.org . The website provides detailed information on the most current research studies, treatments, and disease management approaches. It incorporates the latest in scientific and social research with a unique Resource Locater feature for finding services in local areas and an Ask the Experts feature that allows visitors from all parts of the country to ask questions and get advice and counsel on caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease. These same services can be accessed via our 1-800-ALZino phone line answered 10am to 6pm EST weekdays.
We have launched other initiatives under our Alzheimer’s Information Program. These include Information Rx, a program designed to enable physicians to refer patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers to reliable and helpful online information resources, and Keeping Your Mind Sharp, a program, provided to senior and community organizations nationwide designed to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s disease; how to distinguish between normal age-related memory loss and signs of Alzheimer’s disease; and where to go for help. This program encourages healthy lifestyle regimens that have been shown in research studies to augment brain health and reduce the risk of premature memory impairment. Our latest endeavor is a quarterly magazine, Preserving Your Memory. The magazine not only informs the reader on what are the latest developments in Alzheimer’s disease research, but also applies recent study findings to everyday life to promote brain health in an entertaining but informative manner. Presently, it is distributed to 100,000 doctor’s offices and may be subscribed to online through our website.
Why do you need my support?
Alzheimer’s is the only major cause of death in the US where the numbers are getting worse not better. While the number of deaths from cancer and heart disease have dropped in recent years, deaths attributable to Alzheimer’s have more than doubled. This is because Alzheimer’s is a disease of aging, and as life expectancy has increased, the incidence of Alzheimer’s has also increased. Currently over 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s, and it is estimated that this number will soar as the baby boomers reach retirement age to between 14-16 million people by mid-century if a way is not found to halt this devastating disease. In the face of this growing threat, government funding is grossly inadequate to meet the demands for research dollars. Your donation will help to support this much needed research at one of the world’s leading institutions dedicated to Alzheimer’s research.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
