Assists communities Africa-wide in water, environment, education, business development and emergency relief. Emphasis on food/agriculture and health, especially HIV/AIDS. A leader in aid to Africa.
How do you help people in my community?
Africa's primary beneficiaries are in Africa. Africare works in every major region of the African continent and has more projects in Africa (though not necessarily a larger Africa budget) than any other U.S.-based charity — in other words, among U.S.-based charities working abroad, Africare has by far the strongest presence in Africa.
Why do you need my support?
Every little bit helps. $50.00 a month can sponsor an HIV/AIDS Service Corps volunteer to carry out his/her work in a local community, either through peer education, home-based care or strategies to overcome barriers to HIV/AIDS prevention such as gender inequality, cultural beliefs and high-risk behavior. $1,000 will build a well, providing clean water to villages. Even smaller amounts are welcome. When donating to Africare, donors can specify how they want their funds used or they can allocate them to “Where needed most.” Africare takes great pride in ensuring that the donor’s desires are met.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
Africare has been evaluated and ranked highly with the National Charities Information Bureau and the Better Business Bureau. Independent accountants on a yearly basis audit us, and the audits are available to the public.
Can I Volunteer? How?
Africare does most of its work on the ground in Africa with African staff and African partner organizations. Africare can on occasion accept volunteers in its overseas offices—only if the volunteers can provide complete financial support for themselves (e.g., airfare, living expenses). Those who would like to volunteer overseas and do have complete financial support should submit a proposal discussing means of support and what kind of volunteer experience is sought to: resumes@africare.org.. Unpaid internships are available at the headquarters office in Washington, DC, and occasionally at field offices. Those interested in internships should submit a resume and cover letter to resumes@africare.org describing the following: the kind of internship experience desired, the topic or issue of interest to work on, e.g., HIV/AIDS, food security, fund-raising, etc., the region of Africa of most interest, and how such an internship opportunity would enhance current academic study.
