Protects imperiled wildlife -- lions, mountain gorillas, rhinos, elephants, zebras, wild dogs -- through habitat conservation, science, leadership training and conservation-based economic opportunities for Africans for the last 50 years.
How do you help people in my community?
Because of our mission, the bulk of AWF’s services are provided in Africa. Our main focus in the United States surrounds education and outreach to our supporters regarding the conservation challenges we face in Africa and how AWF is working to address those challenges. Specifically, AWF provides a quarterly newsletter, African Wildlife News, and an e-newsletter to members with updates on the status of our programs in Africa. AWF’s website http://www.awf.org/, in addition to describing our programs and providing updates on the challenges we face, provides information on traveling to Africa, fact-sheets about African Wildlife, and an online Adopt African Animals and Adopt African Acres adoption center.
Why do you need my support?
Our vision for Africa is strategic and profound. But it is implemented every day with people on the ground working to protect the wildlife and wild lands that are at the center of our mission. And at AWF, every donation counts and every dollar donated to AWF helps to bring our vision to life:
*$5 USD can help provide boot laces for a eco-scout
* $15 USD can help provide three durable water bottles for anti-poaching patrols
* $25 USD can help to provide a uniform for a eco-scout
* $50 USD can help provide a pair of binoculars for a scout
* $100 USD can help provide camping gear for anti-poaching missions
*$250 USD can help provide GPS tracking equipment to better find and capture poachers
* $1000 USD can help feed, clothe and equip up to five eco-scouts out in the field on anti-poaching missions
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
AWF takes the responsibility of donations seriously and works to ensure that gifts go toward our work in the field. For every dollar donated to AWF in Fiscal Year 2010, $0.86 cents went directly to our wildlife programs, with $0.08 going towards fundraising efforts and $0.06 towards administrative costs. For the 9th year in a row, the African Wildlife Foundation is proud to announce that it has received the coveted 4-star rating from the charity watchdog group, Charity Navigator. The 4-star award is Charity Navigator's highest rating and reflects AWF’s ability to efficiently manage and grow our finances. Only 1% of the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least 9 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that African Wildlife Foundation consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America.
Can I Volunteer? How?
Since most of our work takes place in Africa, we do not typically use volunteers in the United States. AWF does periodically have openings for interns in our Washington, DC office to assist in our Communications, Program, Membership and Accounting departments. For more information about internships and other opportunities with AWF, please email africanwildlife@awf.org.
