AIDS Service Center

AIDS Service Center (ASC) provides HIV-related services to individuals and families throughout Los Angeles County, which include food, housing, transportation, comprehensive care management, prevention education, mental health service and advocacy.

Why do we exist?

AIDS Service Center is the lead AIDS service organization in the San Gabriel Valley. Our location enables us to serve many clients whose illness makes it difficult for them to take advantages of services located in Los Angeles and West Hollywood. More than 200 families affected by HIV and AIDS, including over 200 children, participate in our Family and Pediatrics Program, which was the first of its kind and serves as a model for others throughout the nation. Being the lead agency, we also host and collaborate with many community organizations throughout the valley and Los Angeles.

What have you accomplished?

Over the past 21 years, ASC has built a reputation for excellence and quality service. More than 1,200 clients are served by ASC each year, and over 7,000 community members are touched by our Prevention and Health Education programs per year. Below are a couple stories illustrating what we do in the community;
• Brenda’s family were planning her funeral when one of our case managers began visiting them.  She was 15 and dieing of AIDS.  7 months later, she was standing in front of a camera telling her story of how, after our staff got her family the resources, she began taking a new HIV drug and is looking forward to continuing on in school. Brenda is also a member of our HIV Teen group.  It is the only place where she can talk about her struggles with HIV to other teens facing similar challenges and other issues relating to life as a teenager.
• Little Alesandro and his mother have just gotten a 2 bedroom apartment to move into after being in a shelter for 6 months. They went to the shelter to escape the violence and abuse that Graciela was putting up with from the man she lived with.  She is HIV+, Alesandro is not.  Graciela is dressed in a simple suit, just returning from one of the classes that she is taking to improve her chances of getting a higher paying job. Even though they only owned a few items of clothing, 2 plates, 2 forks, 2 glasses and 2 spoons, she was very excited about her new apartment and starting over.  Upon sharing her story, we were able to outfit almost the entire apartment with furniture and household items needed to begin a new life.

How do you help people in my community? Why do you need my support?
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it? Can I Volunteer? How?
