LGCW programming reflects political and social concern for local and global communities. LGCW has raised more than $25,000 for other organizations and distributes about 300 complimentary tickets annually.
How do you help people in my community?
The LGCW offers complimentary concert tickets to 35 service organizations in our community that work with people living with HIV/AIDS, the deaf, sexual minority youth, lesbians with cancer and others who cannot easily access the arts. We distribute about 300 tickets annually and one performance of each concert is interpreted for the deaf. Through pro bono appearances and other special events, the LGCW has raised more than $25,000 for other non-profit organizations in our community.
Why do you need my support?
Any gift makes a big difference to us because your gift is an affirmation of our mission and that affirmation fuels our work. We believe that the arts build bridges, and in our case, our tool is music. We envision a world where differences are celebrated, not used to divide people … a world that listens. There are many worthy organizations working on important causes and we count ourselves in that category. If you believe that the arts heal, if you believe that music can empower people to change, and if you believe that healing and empowerment are keys to changing the world, then please consider making a contribution to the Lesbian & Gay Chorus of Washington, D.C.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
The LGCW raises its operating funds (about $85,000) each year. A significant portion of these funds is raised from individuals who support the work of the LGCW. We currently have grant support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities/National Endowment for the Arts and Brother Help Thyself. The LGCW provides an honorarium to the Music Director and employs an Administrative Manager and Accompanist. We believe it is crucial to provide appropriate compensation for these positions. Unless specifically earmarked, the majority of contributions are directed to operations. Operating funds are the hardest to come by but they make a huge difference to the success of any organization. Specific projects cannot be pursued unless operating costs are covered. Your contribution will make a significant difference to the LGCW and you be assured that the organization is managed in a fiscally responsible manner, with oversight from the Chorus-at-large through monthly Meetings for Business and with the professional counsel of a CPA who compiles our annual 990 for the IRS.
Can I Volunteer? How?
Yes. We always need help at concert time. Check out the web page, www.lgcw.org for more information about upcoming events and contact the Administrative Manager if you are interested in volunteering.
